Bethany Czarnecki creates atmospheric, abstract compositions with references to the female form and psyche. The self-taught artist responds instinctually to the world around her, translating memories and feelings into colorful oil paintings. Her works are captivating and command attention in a quiet, meditative way by inviting viewers to wander visually through layers of color. On the occasion of her current solo show, A memory, eternal at Massey Klein Gallery, she reflects below on her journey of becoming an artist after feeling an overwhelming urge to paint eight years ago while pregnant. Since then, painting has become a daily practice that offers a respite from the chaos of the world and an outlet to slow down, reflect, and get lost in the composition.
