Artist talk and Poetry Reading with Kate McQuillen, Lauren Rosenblum and The Friend: Sunday, March 19th, 3pm at Massey Klein Gallery

19 March 2023

Join us at the gallery for an artist talk and poetry reading with painter Kate McQuillen, poet The Friend, and art historian Lauren Rosenblum.  Art historian Lauren Rosenblum will lead a conversation with McQuillen and The Friend about their creative processes and the dialogue between visual and verbal thinking.

Lauren Rosenblum is an art historian specializing in 20th century American printmaking. Prior to entering the doctoral program in art history at The Graduate Center, CUNY, she worked in curatorial departments at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Rosenblum is co-curating the forthcoming exhibition, A Model Workshop: Margaret Lowengrund and The Contemporaries, opening at Print Center New York in fall 2023.

Kate McQuillen's work visually seeks abstract imagery that communicates this same experience of that which is familiar but still unknown. The artist's paintings are hyper-flat and have a deeply matte surface. This allows the viewer to experience the painting without any visual obstruction, creating a feeling as though one might be able to enter each pictorial atmosphere. The artist premixes her colors then paints, layer after layer, a thin and precise application of acrylic through silkscreen. Alternating the direction of the screen and cultivating imperfections and chance happenings through her materials and process, the artist achieves organic imagery that champions and magnifies elusive moments.

The Friend is a poet and teacher based in New York City and the author of two books of poetry: The Late Parade and George Washington (both from W.W. Norton / Liveright). They are a professor in creative writing at Rutgers University.  Follow their substack A Poet’s Notebook at apoetsnotebook.substack.com
