Aliza Morell
Aliza Morell’s paintings flicker between the extra-linguistic qualities of light, touch, and movement and the poetic storytelling of their repeating signs. She draws on the seemingly holographic nature of flowers to hold multiple meanings–like love, seduction, transience, mourning, and resurgence–while performing as vessels for color and instruments of composition.
Morell holds an MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University (2014) and a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2005). She presented her first solo show with Massey Klein in 2023 followed by a two-person booth at the Untitled Art Fair, Miami Beach in 2024. Additionally, Morell’s work has been shown at Thierry Goldberg Gallery, Knockdown Center, Elijah Wheat Showroom, Pioneer Works, and Small Editions in New York, as well as Glass Rice (San Francisco, CA), Tinney Contemporary (Nashville, TN), Tempus Projects, (Tampa, FL), and Camayhus Gallery (Atlanta, GA).
Recent interviews include Create! Magazine (2024) and Interlocutor Magazine (2023). Her work has been featured in New American Paintings three times (2022, 2017, 2014), Hyperallergic, Create Magazine, and Two Coats of Paint. The artist has completed residencies at Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, VT), ACRE (Steuben, WI), Oxbow (Sautatuc, MI), and Harold Arts (Chesterhill, OH). She currently lives and works in Ridgewood, Queens.
