This piece relates to the artist’s interest in visual depictions of unseen forces. Other recent pieces such as Ohm’s Other Law or Cage’s Swimming Pool Sounds deal with sound waves and currents; this piece considers bigger and more physical unseen presences like centrifugal and atmospheric forces.
Do-It-Yourself Tornado Kit contains various references to Pop Art: there are Lichtenstein-like brush renderings throughout, and there is an overall compositional feel of Warhol’s Flowers. The title refers to a Road Runner episode that is filled with visual gags that are all about unseen forces: the whirl of legs, cloud of dust, water-activated tornado seeds, and the highway lifting up like a ribbon behind Road Runner as she jets off.
